Understanding The Bible

STEP 1: The first step you need to take in order to understand the bible is to be willing to read the bible with an unbiased, non rebellious outlook. It's so easy to read something in the bible and dismiss it, or twist the description in order to satisfy our own desires and weaknesses. If you read the Bible with an unwillingness to change. With pride, or inability to confess, and admit to your wrongdoings. YOU WILL FAIL.

STEP 2: The next step you need to take is to understand what you are reading. You need to know what all the words mean. Sometimes there are words we don't understand, and we might be tempted to guess or dismiss the word altogether. You shouldn't do that. Use the dictionary to find out the meaning of the words you don't understand. You must look at, and understand all sentences as a whole.

STEP 3: Use the correct meaning. Some words have double meanings. Think about what is happening and what is being said to understand the authors intentions.

STEP 4: Relate what you have read in the bible to modern day times. Think of things that are happening and the people in today's world. How do they show similarities from those people and scenarios in the bible. This helps to give us a deeper understanding, and stops us thinking of the bible as fictional or only relevant as past tense.

STEP 5: Read the bible as a whole. It's so important to read the bible as a whole, rather than selectively read text to suit our lives. Text can be misunderstood when it's taken out of context. Think of the bible as a puzzle. If you remove pieces. The puzzle is not complete. In the same way that one piece of a puzzle on it's own doesn't mean much.

One example is. If you only read John 3: 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one & only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" You would wrongly assume that all you have to do to have eternal life in heaven is believe that God gave the world his only son.

However, upon reading Matthew 6: 14-15 you will see that it also says "For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." If God does not forgive you of your sins, you will NOT make it to heaven.

STEP 6: The final, and probably most important step is to pray and meditate over the word. If there are passages in the bible that confuse you or don't sit right with you. Ask God to fill you with his understanding and show you his intentions. Only God can erase your doubts.
