Have you ever heard that little voice in your head, telling you all the things that could go wrong? All the ways you could mess up? All the doubts and fears that you have whispered over and over again? I know I have. In fact, I had a conversation with a friend about that very thing the other day. It went something like this: “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Too much time to think,” I said quietly, “That little voice with all the fears…”
“It is not you,” he said, “Listen to it. Does it really sound like you?”
Startled, I thought about it.
“No, she doesn’t,” I said quietly after a moment, frowning.
“She’s trying to make you think she does, though, isn’t she?”
“Mmm hmm,” I agreed, peeling through the layers, uncovering the truth, and praying.
“Well, you know it is not the Lord, because fear isn’t from the Lord, and if it is not you…”
“Yeah,” I said, “he’s gone now.”
“He?” he asked with a grin.
I raised an eyebrow, “Yep.”
He laughed and hugged me.
“Thanks for the reminder,” I said, “I forget, sometimes, that Satan doesn’t always sound the way you think he will.”
I paused for a second and then decided to share,
“The Lord is my light and my salvation-
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life—
Of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked,
Even my enemies, come upon me
They shall stumble and fall
Though a host may encamp against me
I will not fear.
For one thing I desire of the Lord,
And that shall I seek after:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
And behold the beauty of his temple.
In the time of trouble
He shall hide me;
He shall hide me in His pavilion,
In the secret place of His tabernacle,
And there He shall set me upon a rock.
Then my head shall be lifted
Above my enemies who surround me;
And I shall sing,
I shall sing praises unto the Lord.”
Psalm 27:1-6 (NIV)
Do you have a verse to remind you of what the Lord promises? To remind you not to fear? If not, then memorize one right away. Every time that voice comes up, you quote that verse. Because:
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 (NIV)
