"The Great Omission"

"Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Message).

This passage of scripture is known as "The Great Commission." I am concerned that the Great Commission has become the "great omission" of the church. We have too often substituted humanitarianism and benevolence for evangelism. While it is very important to feed the hungry, and we should never neglect the opportunity, the greatest need of every person on earth is to know Jesus!

Let me be very clear! We are commanded to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for those who are in need. That is not the responsibility of government; it is the responsibility of the church. The greater point that I am making, is that we too often stop at benevolence. Benevolent and humanitarian efforts are the methods by which we can build relationship and trust that opens the doors to the Gospel. However, we must never consider those acts of benevolence, humanitarianism, and generosity as the end result. We must tell the whole world about Jesus! Even Jesus said that the poor would always be with us. So, while we should continue to give generously to those who are in need, we must realize that the world needs more than just a temporary solution to an eternity problem. Above all, everyone needs Jesus!
