Joy. Such a small word. Such a big gift. Sometimes you really have to look for it, but its always there. In the small things of life, joy is always present. You look for it because it makes you strong. "the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10
Here's a thought: the joy of the Lord is where you flex your muscles! You have joy muscles!
You want joy. You want to be strong. You long for goodness. Joy, is good. You long for all things good because a good God created you. He put in you a desire for everything Him.
Isn't it interesting that even the vilest of criminals will brag on, or speak of, good. Maybe a good they did. Maybe a good a family member did. Maybe just good things in general, like good weather.
An atheist says there is no God, yet he teaches his child to be a good member of society. To use good manners. To speak kind words. That is good. All good is God.
- In all things good, there is God.
- In all things beautiful, there is God.
- In all things wonderful, there is God.
- In all things victorious, there is God.
In all things good, beautiful, wonderful and victorious, there is joy to be found. Joy is God's very presence.
He will make you "glad with the joy of His presence." Psalm 21:1
You can receive it, or you can reject it. You can soak it up, or you can push it away. It's up to you. But, why would you want to push it away?
Maybe you don't feel worthy of God's lavish love. Or, that you don't deserve to have a good day. Or, that you don't deserve to have even a little joy, a little good, when so much around you or about you is wrong.
That mindset is nothing but the enemy trying to squash the joy of the Lord- your strength. You see, the king of darkness wants to get you down and make you feel worthless and undeserving. I understand that life gets hard. I know it feels like you can't breathe. Your body hurts from the heartaches. You have this hedgeball in the pit of your stomach and no matter how hard you swallow or gasp for air, it won't go away.
Satan wants to keep you there. He wants to press you down. He wants to engulf you in darkness so you feel like you have no strength. He wants to make you believe that you don't deserve joy and goodness. That you don't deserve God.
And, maybe you don't.
But oh, YES YOU DO! Not because of anything you did or didn't do. But because you are Gods.
The enemy knows that if you keep building on even the smallest spark of joy, it will grow and out-power his evil plan. The more you focus on intentionally finding joy, the more you'll find. The more you find, the bigger your God muscle.
"But, where can I find joy?" you ask.
Today look for a small thing that is beautiful. Maybe a child's smile, a waterfall, the clouds everchanging, a bird flittering around in a tree....Whatever you find, look at it. Marvel at it. Soak it up. Enjoy the beauty. That is a little bit of joy. That is a little bit of God muscle.
There is a certain ammount of pride, or self, in the mindset of 'I don't deserve joy' or 'today is better than I deserve'. Those thoughts take away the beauty and the charm, putting the focus on yourself. It saps the spark right out of you.
Realize today that you deserve joy because the God who made you, gives it. It's a gift. You want it. You know you do. So just take it. Receive it. It's OK to be a little selfish and unsatisfied when it comes to receiving the blessing of joy.
It makes you stronger.
It gives you victory.
It gives you God.
Where do you find joy? What helps you flex your Joy Muscle?
