Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." Matthew 11:28-30 The Message
Are you living freely and lightly? If you’re anything like me, that idea sounds very appealing but is far from reality. In the busyness of our days, it is hard to find rest and far too often, our prayer-life can take a back seat. Our lives become full with activity and errands and work. We take on more than we should, especially when serving in church. Our burdens are often heavy and our roles can feel ill-fitting. Yet, the Bible promises that if we keep company with Jesus, we will learn to live freely and lightly.
The first step in this is to keep company with Him. We need to make it a priority, an appointment to keep. We can make devote time to our relationship by setting aside five minutes in the morning, before the children wake up or before we leave for work. We could take the occasional day out to read and to pray. But as with any relationship, we need to maintain communication between these appointments. Whether it’s by chatting to Him as you drive, or by singing to Him as you clean; it is so important to stay in touch. When we make our relationship with Jesus a priority, we can begin to align our steps with His. Aligning our steps with His can mean making some tough choices. It can mean saying no.
Are there areas in your life which just drain you? Are you doing too much? I encourage you to spend some time in prayer. Ask God to bring to mind those activities which are taking up time which He intended to be used elsewhere. Ask Him to show you which burdens He never intended for you to carry. Ask Him to show you how to live freely and lightly. Recover your life and learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
About the Author: I'm Ruth. I am a Christian girl, married to Gary and a mummy to two beautiful children. As a family, we are part of Kerith Community Church. I work part time as a nurse and enjoy singing, writing and wearing pajamas (not to work). I would love to speak publicly about God one day, so I am working on overcoming my fear of walking up stairs in heels. My childhood was difficult and my teenage years were eventful. Sparkly Mess is all about my life now, my life then and what I have learned along the way. My hope is that in (over)sharing my story, others might be encouraged and inspired. I am still very much on a journey and I have a feeling it's going to be a interesting one. But I am expectant and excited to discover what God has planned for me.
