Guilt-Free

Guilt is the enemy’s most powerful weapon against Christians. It’s not the actual temptation, or the act of committing the sin itself, but what follows. I know this because I’ve been there before.

A guilty Christian is exactly where Satan wants him. When I was struggling with guilt, I was as far away from God as I possibly could. Instead of drawing near to God to ask for His forgiveness, I beat myself up saying that I didn’t deserve His grace.

Boy, was I wrong!

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2

There was something that one of my seminary professors said that stuck with me. He said, “Even if the devil can no longer steal your salvation, he can still steal your life.”

This passage tells us that we shouldn’t worry about guilt anymore. We are free because Christ has already set us free. So, instead of focusing on how undeserving we are of His forgiveness, we have to think about how to express our thankfulness about this undeserved grace. We are forgiven. That’s what matters. And being forgiven gives us a lot of things.

1. Being forgiven lets you identify with sinners. Yep. That matters. Feeling lost because of sin lets us feel the depravity of people without Christ. It motivates us to share God’s word and His love so that they too can share our freedom.

2. Being forgiven lets you experience God’s love on a personal level. That intimate conversation wherein you get down on your knees and cry out to God for forgiveness is so special. If you’ve never sinned before, forgiveness would seem like a foreign concept. And like water is to a man, you’ll only appreciate it when you’re so near to dying because of thirst.

4. Being forgiven motivates you to be better. After coming back from the far end, you’ll never want to go back to that sick dark place again. I never EVER want to go back. Now, I’m more motivated to do all that I can so that no one will experience what I did. And though forgiveness is all about God and none about my personal efforts, I’m bent on using my new found liberty to glorify God with my life.

So, whether you’re needing forgiveness, have just recently been forgiven, or still struggling with guilt, remember this verse and the fact that God has already set you free.

Be happy. Be grateful.

And that’s my two cents on that.
