Evangelism Is Like Selling Knives

Matthew 9:37-38 (New Living Translation)37 He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

I was able to spend about an hour this morning with one of my daughters friends who has recently begun selling knives to put himself through college. I told him up front that finances were low, my husband had spent 5 weeks without a job after being laid off right before Christmas, but Jamie told me that I didn't need to purchase anything, he just needed to practice his presentation.

So at 8 am our living room transformed into a knife showroom. After about 10 minutes of demonstrations and listening to Jamie talk about how awesome the knives were because they were indestructible, well balanced and sharp as-all-get-out, I really wanted them. He was so passionate about these knives, he knew everything there was to know about them and I have to admit they were pretty impressive, he sliced a single grape into about 11 paper thin sheets, they put all of the knives in my cluttered junk drawer to shame. I wanted me some new knives, Jamie had something awesome and amazing, and I had to have it.

Of course I wasn't able to buy any knives, but I went from someone who was just trying to help out a friend by listening to him give a spiel, to someone who wanted what he was selling. I am sure that Jamie has a tough time selling knives, I am confident that there are many people that refuse to listen, or that laugh at him because of his belief in this product, but I think there are many others like me that are interested in learning more, and maybe even trying them out once they hear what he has to say.

This whole morning reminded me of evangelism, and how I absolutely dread sharing my faith because I am terrified that I will say something stupid, or that they will ask me a question that I do not know the answer to. All of these fears point back to me not being comfortable because I have not put in the study time or the demo hours to get better at it.

I have something so much more life changing than knives to share. I want to tell everyone I meet about my Jesus, the Life Saver, Redeemer, Forgiver and Friend that I have found in Him. I want to be passionate about it, like Jamie was about those knives.

Father, I am sorry not being diligent in sharing my faith. Lord, give me courage and wisdom to do so. I love you and I want the whole world to know you.

In Jesus Name,

Amen.
