Don't Let the Devil Set You Up For Anxiety!

4 Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! 5 Let all men know and perceive and recognize your unselfishness (your considerateness, your forbearing spirit). The Lord is near [He is [a]coming soon].6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition ([b]definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.7 And God’s peace [shall be yours, that [c]tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [d]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:4-7  Amplified Bible Anxiety has a cycle.  It starts with the devil putting a thought in our heads that starts with “What if…?“  Then when he can get us to think about that, he brings pictures of it happening!  Then we begin to feel the “symptoms” of anxiety and more thoughts come in the form of “Oh, my chest hurts, I feel dizzy, I feel weak…what if this is my heart, or what if it is my blood pressure?”  Then the pictures of us being ”sick” begin to form and here comes panic and more thoughts!  “I have to get that report out to my boss by tomorrow!  What if I am sick and can’t present it?  I missed the last meeting, I will really be in hot water if I miss this one!”  We are in full-blown anxiety and it starts the vicious cycle all over again, but with even worse results!

Any time you feel anxiety, hopelessness, fear, depression, or any other negative feeling know the devil has come on the scene and is using your mind as his “playground”!   God would NEVER come to you and tell you something is hopeless!  His word says all things are possible to him who believes!  If God said it was hopeless the word would be a lie and we know God cannot lie!   God wouldn’t tell you, you better be scared now, because He just doesn’t have an answer to this problem.  This is one that never crossed His mind!  God says He knows everything from the beginning to the end so He can’t be caught off guard!  God will never come and say “You better be down about this!  This is just one I can’t fix!”  He says in the Word He causes you to TRIUMP in ALL  your ways!  He PERFECTS everything concerning you!

What went wrong here?  We started letting our thoughts get “hijacked” by the enemy. First of all,  instead of doing what the first part of the verse says which is, 4 Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! we rehearsed the “what ifs”.    How do you gladden yourself in the Lord?  You rehearse His goodness, not your possible problem!  You magnify the goodness of God like David did!  You remember all He has done for you in the past when you thought it was hopeless and impossible and God made it work out perfectly!

Secondly, we entertained the anxious thoughts by thinking what would WE do IF they happened instead of committing them to prayer!  Our verse says, “6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer  …”  Instead of praying,  we just let our mind wander until all we could see on the “movie screen” of our minds was the worst thing possible shaping into reality!  We failed to recognize the anxious thoughts and in doing so, we failed to pray and make our requests  known to God!  Had we prayed, stood on the Word  that we know the devil is no match for,  much of this would have been nipped in the bud as we say in Texas!  This is why the Bible says resist the devil at his onset!  In other words,  shut him down before he can even get started!

Thirdly, we “with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.”  You aren’t going to thank someone for something that  you really believe isn’t going to be given to you.  We know, in the second step we RECEIVED, now we thank God for it!  Gratitude is a form of praise!  Remember, my dear reader, PRAISE ALWAYS BRINGS BREAKTHROUGHS!  When Jehosaphat was surrounded by nations who wanted to kill him and destroy his people, God told him to send the praisers out first!  The enemy got so confused, they turned on each other and killed each other!  Jehosophat and his people went among the bodies and collected the wealth and riches of those nations for three solid days!!  See how powerful praise is?  Thank God you have the Word on it, you believe it, and you don’t have anything to worry about!

When you do these simple steps in this scripture then God promises His peace   [shall be yours, that [c]tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [d]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  What a beautiful promise!  Today, more than ever, people are looking for peace.  You see people crying out for it on the news.  You see people taking drugs, getting involved in alcoholism, and many other destructive behaviors just to numb hurt and anxiety and have, to some degree,  peace only God can give them!

My precious reader, know lasting and true peace can only come from one source, and that is God Himself!  If you don’t know Him, invite Jesus into your heart to be your Lord and Saviour!  Let Him take your care and take care of it, once and for all!  He will never fail you or forsake you!  He loves you and is waiting to be your Saviour!  A saviour SAVES someone from something they can’t save themselves from!

I pray peace, joy, and love as Jesus only can give is yours today!  May you be abundantly blessed, dear reader!
