My life is full of unbelievable signs, coincidences and just plain out-of-nowhere blessings – so much so, that I’ve almost lost sight of just how amazing this type of communication with God really is. I talk to God all throughout the day (literally: asking Him what He feels like doing, comparing different things that are going on in my life with stuff that’s happened in the Bible (I think it’s important we don’t just always talk about me, so I try to talk about His friends too and think about everything He has going on), I actually say things in my head like, “Hey look! Look! That’s what I was telling you about earlier!” when stuff happens…). It might not be the most conventional of relationships, but I really feel like God’s my friend – just as real as someone I’d pick up the phone and call. Only every now and then, He reminds me that even though He’s my friend, He’s still God.
Now I know where you probably think this is going: every now and then God demands a more formal relationship or something like that. But no, that’s not where I’m heading at all. I think God wants us to draw close to Him in any and every way we can, and I think it makes Him happy when we want to hang out with Him. What I meant by, “He’s still God” is:
He’s still God.
So I can’t just shoot Him a text and He can’t (well, I should probably be careful using a word like can’t…) – He chooses not to reply with “LOL” and a bunch of smiley faces. When it comes to humor, God has to think a little outside of the box. And, with the whole world at His fingertips, that leaves a lot of room for creativity.
I say all this because lately, in my life, it’s just been one thing after another. And then today something else happened that finally made me yell out loud, “Are you kidding me?!“
And the first thought that popped into my head was: “Yes!”
Now I know that was probably just my own little thought, but it really got me thinking. Maybe God really was kidding. Him and I had been talking about this one thing a lot. So sure – I could look at today’s incident as just what-are-the-odds bad luck. But seriously, what are the odds?! Wouldn’t it make more sense to think that God actually was kidding? Reminding me to loosen up a little bit? I mean just because He doesn’t have an iPhone or Facebook doesn’t mean He doesn’t like to joke around!
Once I started thinking about it, the whole situation seemed a million times better. My thoughts went like this:
“Are you kidding me?!”
“Huh? Wait… Hmmm…”
“Ha. That’s actually kind of funny.”
“That’s actually really funny!”
“LOL! Good one, God!”
And then, the craziest thing happened: I wasn’t worried about my problem any more! I didn’t feel like the world was out to get me – in fact, I felt like there was no way the world could get me because I was kinda hanging out with creator of the universe. And I felt even that much closer to God.
So was God kidding? Does He really joke around with us? I don’t know. All I’m saying is next time you find yourself pulling out your hair and screaming, “Are you kidding me?!”, stop and listen for a “Yes.” Because guaranteed if you hear it, and you laugh along, things will get a lot better a lot faster.
At least they did for me. :)
Have you ever felt the same way? Do you think God has a sense of humor?
