"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away." (Song of Songs 8:6-7) How many of us, honestly, think of love in this way? With such an intense passion as the author of these verses. Love is strong as a blazing fire, one that no water can put out, yet if you continue reading on to the end of verse 7, it says that love also cannot be bought..."If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned."
When I read this chapter in Song of Songs, I got goosebumps on my arms and butterflies in my stomach. Love is not meant to be bought, with a price tag put on it. Love is meant to be given freely and unconditionally. But read between the lines and the writer of these verses asks for something in return: commitment..."Place me like a seal over your heart". How often these days is love given without commitment? If things get hard, we say we don't love each other anymore and go our separate ways. If we find someone we think is more handsome or more beautiful, we change our mind. Love should be given freely as in this passage but also with the commitment that no other will ever have my love. I gave that commitment to my husband the day I married him and this passage made me remember that all over again. Because this passage talks of a love that will outlast their bodies. That's my kind of love.
I end this post with a prayer...Heavenly Father, help me to show love the way the author of this passage does. Help me to ensure my husband always knows he has my unconditional and eternal love. Amen.
